Huntingdon is well placed for a wide choice of things to do. As well as the shops, cafes and restaurants, there are a number of places to visit for all the family.
History and natural beauty
Huntingdon offers a blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty. Explore the Cromwell Museum to delve into the life of the pivotal historical figure Oliver Cromwell. Hinchingbrooke Country Park provides 150 acres of lakes, meadows, and woodlands, perfect for walking, birdwatching, or enjoying a picnic.
Visit All Saints’ Church, a medieval structure with stunning stained-glass windows and a rich history. Take in the scenic views or visit the play park along the River Great Ouse at Riverside Park. Below is some of the highlights to see and do.
Cromwell Museum
The Museum opened in 1962 in the old grammar school where Cromwell and Samuel Pepys were once pupils.
After leaving school, Cromwell studied briefly at Cambridge before marrying and settling in Huntingdon. At his death on 3 September 1658, he was the head of state and for some a ‘king in all but name’. He is an intensely controversial and fascinating figure of British history.
The Museum sets out neither to celebrate nor denigrate his achievements but to interpret, where possible, the significance of ‘God’s Englishman’.
Hinchingbrooke Country Park
Open grasslands, meadows, woodlands and lakes cover 150 acres with a wealth of wildlife everywhere. Perfect for walking the dog, exploring with children, enjoying tea and homemade cakes in the cafe or picnicking with friends or family. Look out for the Foraging Days in Spring and Summer.
Grafham Water
Grafham Water is a scenic reservoir near Huntingdon, perfect for walking, cycling, and watersports. With its nature trails, play areas, and café, it’s a great spot for a family day out. It’s home to a diverse range of wildlife, making it ideal for nature lovers.
Houghton Mill
Houghton Mill is a historic watermill on the River Great Ouse, offering a glimpse into traditional milling. Surrounded by scenic meadows, it’s ideal for walks, cycling, and relaxing by the riverside.
